REL 400-56 - Dialoguing with Jews in St. Cloud
1 credit course (Spring 2004)
St. Cloud State University
This is a community-experience based introduction to Judaism and to
Jewish-Christian dialogue.
Tuesdays 6-8 pm (2/3, 2/10, 2/17, 2/24, [3/2], 3/9) at six different
churches in and near St. Cloud, MN. Speakers, panelists, participation of
diverse area religions, kosher-style meal, videos on Jewish-Christian
dialogue, personal contact with local Jews, child-care facilities, child
education on Judaism, and much, much more.

Requirements:
Attendance and participation during a series of six 120-min. dialogues
between Jews and others (religionists as well as no-religionists) in the
community, especially Christians. (The dialogue session of 3/2 will be
optional for students)

First and only meeting as a class:
Tues 1/27, 6-7.30 pm Brown Hall After mutual introductions, the
instructor will introduce the course requirements and process. Registered
students are currently already on an e-discussion list with the instructor
Students will come to class with a 250-300 word essay stating what they
believe their level of knowledge of Jews and Judaism is before the course;
have they ever been personally acquainted with any Jews (individuals or
communities); do they happen to know the religious branch of Judaism to which
such Jews belong(ed); have they read literature, viewed media productions, or
taken course(s) pertaining to Jews or Judaism; have they ever engaged in
Jewish-Christian dialogue, how often, and with what effect; have they read
any official statements (religious, interfaith, or secular documents) which
provide guidelines on how non-Jews could relate to Jews; do they have any
thoughts on semitism or anti-semitism; what do they hope to accomplish by
participating in the "Jews-Dialogues-Beliefs" series.
Students will commit to a 500-750 word report with critical reflection on
each dialogue (except for the session of 3/2). Texts to be followed, street
