REL 400-56 - Dialoguing with Jews in St. Cloud
1 credit course (Spring 2004)
St. Cloud State University

This is a community-experience based introduction
to Judaism and to Jewish-Christian dialogue.

Tuesdays 6-8 pm (2/3, 2/10, 2/17, 2/24, [3/2], 3/9)
at six different churches in and near St. Cloud, MN.
Speakers, panelists, participation of diverse area religions,
kosher-style meal, videos on Jewish-Christian dialogue,
personal contact with local Jews, child-care facilities,
child education on Judaism, and much, much more.

Requirements:

Attendance and participation during a series of six 120-min.
dialogues between Jews and others (religionists as well as
no-religionists) in the community, especially Christians.
(The dialogue session of 3/2 will be optional for students)

First and only meeting as a class:

Tues 1/27, 6-7.30 pm Brown Hall
After mutual introductions, the instructor will introduce
the course requirements and process. Registered students are
currently already on an e-discussion list with the instructor

Students will come to class with a 250-300 word essay stating
what they believe their level of knowledge of Jews and Judaism
is before the course; have they ever been personally acquainted
with any Jews (individuals or communities); do they happen to know
the religious branch of Judaism to which such Jews belong(ed);
have they read literature, viewed media productions, or taken
course(s) pertaining to Jews or Judaism; have they ever engaged
in Jewish-Christian dialogue, how often, and with what effect;
have they read any official statements (religious, interfaith,
or secular documents) which provide guidelines on how non-Jews
could relate to Jews; do they have any thoughts on semitism or
anti-semitism; what do they hope to accomplish by participating
in the "Jews-Dialogues-Beliefs" series.

Students will commit to a 500-750 word report with critical
reflection on each dialogue (except for the session of 3/2).
Texts to be followed, street addresses of the 6 churches,
theme and framework of each dialogue, overall objectives
and vision statement all can be found at
